The BÉTHEL association provides practical training in individual craft and artistic skills to encourage the development of imaginery and to help discover individuals' creative abilities through antiques restoration :

CABINET MAKING

UPHOLSTERING


• The training is mainly based on practical tutorials, complemented with technology and style lessons. Tailored additional training is also offered to improve individual's skills level.

• Every trainee has a workbench as well as a toolbox, at their disposal.

• The practical tutorials are carried out on period antiques.




CABINET MAKING • The study programme includes :

• Introduction to basic principles - Solid wood, veneer and finishes :
•• Tooling, stripping, mortise and tenon joints, splices, tree species, waxed and satin finishes.

• Solid wood - Improvement course :
•• Delicate assemblies, dovetail joints, Louis XIII tab cutting, slides, splice concealing, introduction to carving.

• Solid wood
- Proficiency course - Restoration, scribing, carving and turning :
•• 1:1 scribing, restoration.
•• Turning between points, against the grain, bucket turning, imprint.
•• Voluted feet carving, floral carving, shells, palmates, mouldings, cornices.

• Veneer - Introduction to threads and finishes :
•• Hot glue making, splices, blister mending, veneer removal, core restoration, friezes, threads laying and inlaying, gum laquer, finishes.

• Veneer - Improvement course - Marquetry, pad varnishing :
•• Layered marquetry, element by element.
•• Pad varnishing - filling, make-up, loading, lightening.


Veneer - Proficiency course - BOULLE marquetry :
•• Materials use and restoration : metal, tortoiseshell, mother of pearl, bone, ivory, straw.
•• Study of glues suited for each material, straw marquetry.

UPHOLSTERING • The study programme includes :

• Seat joinery - Solid wood and veneer :
•• Introduction to basic principles, tooling, stripping, mortise and tenon joints, splices, tree species, waxed and satin finishes.
•• Introduction to minor restoration of seat legs.

• Upholstering and covering basics:
•• Tapestry basics, evolution of the various upholstery periods.
•• Upholstery techniques, strapping, springs layout, stiffening, tilting, introduction to paddings.

Improvement course - Level 1 - Chairs, stools, cabriolet armchairs :
• Study of the various kinds of paddings (Louis XIII, Louis XIV, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directoire and Empire) according to periods.
•• Backs : Queen, basket-handle and medallion styles.

Improvement course - Level 2 - Wing chairs, squat armchairs :
•• Study of humped backs, scribing and seaming of chair backs.
•• Piping finish.
•• Scalloped flounces seaming.
•• Cushion scribing and cover seaming.

• Proficiency course - Level 1 - Empire upholstering and "galettes" :
•• Blade padding, chain stitching.
•• Empire cuffs, "galettes" trimming, angles stitching.
•• ??? Dossiers à tableau ???.

• Proficiency course - Level 2 - Padding, ramp, seaming :
•• Napoléon III padding : Study, trimming, fullness scribing, padding fitting.
•• Napoléon III ramp back.
